Five things you might not know about Dom Square

Dom Square may be Utrecht’s most well-known square, but there is a lot more behind the imposing Dom Tower and its ancient stones than first meets the eye.

Did you know…

  1. This is where the story of Utrecht began? No other place in the Netherlands brings together 2,000 years of history within such a remarkably small area. Little wonder Dom Square serves as Utrecht’s vibrant hub, where diverse communities and worlds converge. Descend to the remnants of the Roman fort at DOMunder, where it all began, and experience the city’s rich history.
  2. The Dom Tower was once part of the cathedral? Until the devastating storm of 1674, the Dom Tower was connected to Dom Church by the cathedral’s nave. When the nave collapsed during the storm, it left behind the open space we now know as Dom Square.
  3. The square still serves as the city’s main stage? Today, Dom Square regularly hosts public events. From WWII memorial ceremonies on 4 May to cultural festivals and open-air concerts, the square is the city’s main stage throughout the year. Next time you’re dancing the night away, remember the 2,000 years of history beneath your feet!
  4. A medieval herb garden lies just off the square? Step straight from Dom Square into the Pandhof, the former monastery garden of Dom Church. In the Middle Ages, cathedral canons cultivated different medicinal herbs, flowers and plants here. Many of these still grow in the garden today, creating a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city—with an atmosphere straight out of a Harry Potter film!
  5. A hidden imperial palace is right beneath your feet? Few people realise that beneath Dom Square are the remains of a medieval imperial palace. Descend to uncover the story of Lofen Palace, a remarkable hidden treasure.
