Van Schijndel House

A House of Light and Space
The Van Schijndel house is a true signature house wherein every aspect including most of the furniture was designed and built by Mart van Schijndel himself. The architect’s vision and key concepts of light colour space and furniture design make this impressive house stand out as a Gesamtkunstwerk. The architect built this extraordinary house for himself in 1992. Although he only had 175 square meters to work with van Schijndel ‘sculpted the space’ and made it feel seemingly larger by the impressive use of light and colour. In 1999 the Van Schijndel House was included in the Utrecht Municipal Historic Buildings Register due to its special architectural value making the house the youngest listed architectural landmark in The Netherlands.

Visiting the Van Schijndel House
Every first Sunday of the month a small group (max. 10 people) can tour by appointment the privately owned and inhabited Van Schijndel House. A private tour can also be arranged on other days by appointment for a minimum donation of 190 euro to the Mart van Schijndel Foundation. Occasionally a lecture concert or film screening is scheduled related to the architect’s ideas and work and architecture or design.
