Utrecht XL: make the most of your city trip!
If you’re looking for a great getaway, Utrecht is the perfect pick. This city effortlessly blends art, culture and history with trendy spots, quirky shops and an energetic vibe. When evening falls, you can unwind in cosy cafés, great restaurants and soak up the buzzing nightlife. Our editor, Maaike (34), set out to discover the city: “After just a few days, it felt like I’d been on holiday. That’s how much Utrecht has to offer.” So, when are you going?
Day 1
9.58 am — Coffee
My trip started, as it should, with a cup of proper coffee. I grabbed an espresso and a treat to-go from Kluts, a coffee bar and vegan bakery. Next, I strolled over to Karibu, a lovely venue in an iconic building. Their ‘brekkie’, brunch and cakes are definitely worth trying. With two coffee stops under my belt, I was ready to explore the city.
11:19 am — Wanderlust
What could be better than spending a Saturday morning strolling through a market filled with unique treasures from local entrepreneurs? Utrecht’s street markets are one of a kind — and easy to combine with a visit to the many charming boutiques and vintage shops in the city centre like those on Twijnstraat.
12.43 pm — Lunch and brunch
All that wandering works up an appetite. I’d heard great things about at TivoliVredenburg music venue. Whether you’re there for a gig or a bite to eat, the restaurant is a lovely spot with good lunch, drinks and dinner menus. I ended up choosing Louis Hartlooper Complex, an art-house cinema and restaurant in a stunning art deco building. Speaking of architecture, the remarkable on Neude is home to the colourful eatery and deli NODA. And there’s a bonus feature: the ‘hidden’ lift entrance on the canal side.
14.30 pm — And… relax
After lunch, I popped into the Utrechtse Boekenbar, a charming bookshop ideal for losing yourself among its selection of books. Then I headed to Koffie Leute Record Store. As the name suggests, this is the place for coffee and vinyl — a true haven for music lovers. Tip: if you’re looking for ultimate relaxation, book a massage or treatment at Five City Spa, right in the heart of the city.
15.41 pm — Piece of cake
A friend of mine swears that is the best patisserie in town, so I had to see it for myself. And he wasn’t wrong — delicious cakes, lovely tea and excellent service. It’s also a great option for a tasty (late) lunch. More of a chocolate fan? Head over to Chocolaterie Cacao to sample their treats and even join a workshop.
16.37 pm — Time for drinks
Utrecht is full of great places for drinks, so you’ll never have to search for long. I met up with friends at the , where you can play ping-pong(!) and board games while enjoying tasty snacks and drinks. Prefer your drinks without any games? Head to the welcoming Muzieklokaal and raise a glass to the sound of classical (live) music.
18.59 pm — Dinner
We had dinner at De Klub, quite possibly the most charming restaurant in Utrecht. The passionate and friendly owners have big culinary ambitions, all while keeping the atmosphere warm and relaxed. Another place that deserves a mention is Goesting. Once a dog kennel in the historic Veterinary School, it’s now a delightful eatery that serves delicious organic dishes made with local ingredients.
21.28 pm — Clubbing
After dinner, the rest of the evening was just waiting to take off. We walked to an intimate cultural venue with live music and an electric vibe. Time flies when you’re having fun! A few friends carried on dancing at Hofman, which hosts club nights every weekend. Prefer a traditional pub crawl? Utrecht is packed with bars, pubs and cafés, so take your pick and let loose!
00.49 am — Hotel
I walked back to Bunk with the rest of the group. Bunk is a monumental former church transformed into a trendy hotel, restaurant, bar and cultural hub. You can sleep in comfortable rooms or in pods — great for budget travellers who still value comfort. Looking for something a little more boutique? Try Mother Goose, a quaint hotel in a former city castle (and former squat). Sleep tight!

Day 2
10.03 am — Breakfast
Time for breakfast and, of course, coffee. Bunk has an excellent restaurant that’s open all day — perfect for a hearty breakfast if you need one.😊 Just across the canal, within walking distance, you’ll find Dubbel/Dwars, another fantastic spot for breakfast or brunch (boozy brunch anyone?).
11.44 am — Soaking up some culture
Before catching the train home, we made sure to soak up a good dose of culture — when in Utrecht, right? At the Volksbuurtmuseum, we learned all about life, camaraderie and hardship in Utrecht’s working-class neighbourhoods over the years. Museum enthusiasts will love the Museum Quarter and the excellent museums like Centraal Museum and the University Museum Utrecht. The area itself is a gem, packed with historic buildings and hidden alleyways.
Can’t get enough of Utrecht? Consider spending an afternoon cycling, awakening your senses in the adventurous Doloris Anoma Maze or booking a tour of the city!
