Whose are Those Wings?

Location: Louis Hartlooper Complex, Wijde Doelen
Artist: Ilya Kabakov

On the wall of the Louis Hartlooper Complex, the former Tolsteeg police station, you will find a light installation by Russian artist Ilya Kabakov. He visualised the historical role of the building by dividing the wall into two planes with neon tubes. Blue wings light up along the edges: a Russian symbol for the police force. The artwork acknowledges the building’s role as a former police station but also its significance regarding the Holocaust. During WW2, Bureau Tolsteeg was the place where all Jewish residents from Utrecht were imprisoned before they were deported.
