Utrecht Heritage Day
On Saturday 12 September 2026, Open Monumentendag Utrecht celebrates its 40th anniversary edition. During this annual heritage event, dozens of monuments throughout the city of Utrecht open their doors free of charge, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the city’s rich history from the inside.
This year’s theme, Resilient Heritage: Utrecht Protects!, focuses on the role monuments have played in protecting people through the centuries. From forts and waterworks to churches, hospitals, factories and historic homes, many buildings in Utrecht were created to offer safety and shelter during times of war, flooding, disease or social hardship.
At the same time, the event also highlights the vulnerability of heritage itself. Climate change, urban development and decay continue to put pressure on historic buildings and sites. Through stories, tours and activities, visitors discover how Utrecht’s heritage is preserved today, from large restoration projects to the everyday efforts of volunteers and monument owners.
In addition to free access to participating monuments, the programme includes guided tours, walking and cycling routes, lectures and other activities that invite visitors to experience Utrecht’s heritage from new perspectives.
Open Monumentendag Utrecht offers the chance to step inside both iconic landmarks and hidden historical gems throughout the city.
