Ten statues are placed between Utrecht, the city of Gerrit Rietveld, and Amersfoort, the city of Piet Mondriaan.
They mark the special bond between these two cities and are a lasting reminder of the celebration of 100 years art movement De Stijl (1917-2017). The artistic legacy of it can no longer be ignored.
Artist Boris Tellegen (1986) designed the sculptures, each over 6.5 meters high. They stand as striking totems in the landscape along this cycle route, connecting both cities with a rich creative history and future.

De Stijl bicycle route; Mondriaan meets Rietveld

FROM UTRECHT Start at Kleine Singel by the KERN sculpture. Cycle past Griftpark on the Blauwkapelseweg to the roundabout. Turn right onto Kardinaal de Jongweg. Go over the roundabout and continue on Biltse Rading. You will now pass the BAKEN sculpture.
DE BILT/BILTHOVEN Cycle under the A27 viaduct and continue on towards De Bilt. Cycle all the way along Biltse Rading to the Groenekanseweg roundabout. Cross over this roundabout. With a slight bend you come onto ’t Beukenlaantje. You then pass the 1917 sculpture. Continue cycling past Larenstein business park to Tweelingen. Turn right here towards Melkweg. Continue on Melkweg to the roundabout and cross over into Hertenlaan, which becomes 2e Brandenburgerweg. At the Leyenseweg roundabout, turn right. Continue on until you get to the junction with Soestdijkseweg Zuid, where you turn left. At the next major junction, turn right into Boslaan. Follow the left-hand bend into Sperwerlaan. Just keep on cycling, cross over the roundabout and go straight on until Sperwerlaan bends to the right into Julianalaan. Continue on Julianalaan until it turns off into Paltzerweg. Here you will find the SOKKEL sculpture. Cycle along Paltzerweg to the junction with Baarnseweg.
DEN DOLDER Go left onto Baarnseweg, then cross over Dolderseweg and continue on to Andreas Foxlaan where you go left. When you get to the railway, go right onto the cycle path and then keeping following the railway. You’ll find the CONSTRUCTIE sculpture by the business park.
SOEST About 100 metres after the Op Hees wildlife crossing you will pass the SPIEGEL sculpture. At the railway crossing at Berkenlaantje cross over to the other side of the railway, De Beaufortlaan. At Soesterduinen you will cycle past the GROEN sculpture, where there are also picnic benches. In Soestduinen the route crosses the busy Soesterbergsestraat (N413), at cafeteria De Spoorhut. Continue following the railway towards Amersfoort. At Heezerspoor Oost you will find the UTOPIE sculpture.
AMERSFOORT The path goes away from the railway line and you cycle through Monnikenbos nature reserve. At the end of this path you reach the N221. You will see the HOEFDIER sculpture on the bend in the road. Cross over the road onto Barchman Wuytierslaan, signposted Amersfoort station. You will find the CHOGOKIN sculpture by the Q-Park P+R. This is the tenth and last sculpture on the route. From here, it takes about 5 minutes to cycle into Amersfoort city centre where you’ll also find the Mondriaanhuis.
FROM AMERSFOORT Start at the Q-Park P+R on Barchman Wuytierslaan at the first sculpture, CHOGOKIN. Cycle along Barchman Wuytierslaan until you see the HOEFDIER sculpture on the right in the bend of the N221. Cross over the road into Monnikenbos nature reserve, via the Monnikenboschpad cycle path.
SOEST Around 100 metres into the woods, you’ll reach the municipal limits of Soest. Keep following the route along the train tracks to Heezerspoor Oost, where you’ll see the UTOPIE (‘UTOPIA’) sculpture. When you come to cafeteria De Spoorhut, cross Soesterbergweg and continue along the bicycle path. Past Soestduinen is the GROEN (‘GREEN’) sculpture, which also has picnic tables nearby. Cross the railway crossing on the left at Berkenlaantje, then immediately turn right again where the bicycle path continues along the train tracks on the other side. This part of the route will take you to the SPIEGEL (‘MIRROR’) sculpture. After you’ve cycled under the Op Hees ecoduct, you’ll head towards Den Dolder. The route runs parallel to the Fornheselaan industrial park. Here you’ll pass by the CONSTRUCTIE (‘CONSTRUCTION’) sculpture.
DEN DOLDER The bicycle path continues on Fornheselaan. Keep cycling along the train tracks until you reach Andreas Foxlaan. Turn left, then follow the road as it curves to the right. Cross Doldersweg to Baarnseweg. When you come to the intersection, turn right onto Paltzerweg.
DE BILT/BILTHOVEN Continue on Paltzerweg. Where Paltzerweg becomes Julianalaan, you’ll see the SOKKEL (‘PEDESTAL’) sculpture. Continue cycling on Julianalaan until you can turn left onto Sperwerlaan. This Sperwerlaan curves slightly to the right. Follow the road until you reach the intersection with Boslaan. Turn right. At the next intersection, turn left onto Soestdijkseweg Zuid. Then take the first right onto Leyenseweg. At the roundabout, turn left onto 2e Brandenburgerweg. Stay on this road until it becomes Hertenlaan. Cross the roundabout onto Melkweg. Go all the way down Melkweg until you reach the end in Tweelingen. Turn left onto the forest path, ’t Beukenlaantje. When you leave ’t Beukelaantje, the 1917 sculpture will be on your left. Cross the Groenekanseweg roundabout to De Biltsche Rading. Follow the bicycle path on the left side of the road towards Utrecht.
UTRECHT Continue on De Biltsche Rading. You’ll cycle beneath the viaduct at the A27. The Voorveldse polder will be on your left. Here you’ll see the BAKEN (‘BEACON’) sculpture. Keep cycling until you reach the roundabout at Kardinaal Alfrinkplein. Cross the roundabout. Stick to the left side of the road and follow the bicycle path on Kardinaal de Jongweg. Keep cycling until you reach the roundabout at Eykmanplein. Turn left onto Blauwkapelsewerg and follow the bicycle path along Griftpark. The Kleine Singel begins at the corner of the park. The KERN (‘CORE’) sculpture stands out somewhat in the park due to its height. This is the tenth and final sculpture on the route. You have arrived at the border of Utrecht’s city centre. The Centraal Museum is about a five-minute bike ride from this location.
