Schiller Theater

There is a memorial stone in front of the special Schillertheater in Minrebroederstraat. It states that composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stayed here in 1766 as a boy in what was then still called the guest house "Plaets Royael".

At that time Mozart gives concerts in the centre of Utrecht and rehearses in a small hall in the current Schillertheater. Admission to his concert costs three guilders for 'a Lord and a Lady' and two guilders for a 'Single Person'. Father Leopold sells the tickets himself from the lodging.

Over time, the building serves as a party hall for the Utrecht student choir and as a dance institute. It is also a place to enjoy cabaret. The theatre produces celebrities such as Herman Berkien and Tineke Schouten. Yet at some point the theatre is in danger of disappearing. Fortunately, Hannie and Steef Schinkel managed to prevent this by buying the building in 2003, with the help of many culture lovers.

And so after all these years you can still go there for a dose of culture in a charming, historical setting.
