Marking the Castellum Wall

Locations: Domstraat, Servetstraat and Korte Nieuwstraat
Artist: Okra Landscape Architects

In Roman times, Utrecht was on the northern border of the Roman Empire. A walled fortress stood on the site of Dom Square. Utrecht was then known as Trajectum and the Roman fortress was called Castellum Trajectum. The wall, of course, is long gone. But in the evening, it emerges like a ghost from the past. Every 15 minutes, it takes the shape of a magical line of steam and coloured light, rising from street level at Domstraat, Servetstraat and Korte Nieuwstraat.
